Celebrating the model’s 20th anniversary and Griffey's return home
.
It's been 20 years since "The Kid" hit the diamond in his first signature shoe, which quickly gained a lot of attention and instantly extended beyond the game of baseball as the Air Griffey Max I. Debuting in 1996, during Ken Griffey's time with the Seattle Mariners, the Ken Griffey Max 1 was the sneaker to have in your rotation. At the time, Griffey was the poster child for baseball. Drafted in 1987 – just 7 years in the majors – Griffey had already attained recognition for stealing bases, power-hitting and being a regular .300 hitter.
The Nike Air Griffey Max 1 was the beginning to some proverbial silhouettes as well as the launch of Nike's Swingman line. Fans last got to see the silhouette in 2009, in retro form and OG colorway.
Now back again in 2016, the Air Griffey Max 1 will return featuring the exact details and colorways as its predecessor. Done up with a leather emerald base and black suede upper, the sneaker includes white accents on the branding, shoe laces, midsole and outsole with hits of varsity red on the Swoosh branding. Look for this retro model to hit select Nike Sportswear retailers including Nike.com.
